Maryam Mirzakhani (Persian: مریم میرزاخانی) was born on 12 May 1977 in Tehran, Iran. In 2014, Maryam became the first and to-date only woman to win the Fields Medal (often described as the “Nobel Prize of Mathematics”) when she was working as a professor of mathematics at Stanford University. She died on 14 July 2017 after a long battle with cancer.
It is impossible to create a talent as hers, but it might be possible to support such talents. The purpose of Maths4 Maryams is to support Maryams-to-be by focusing on one of the deciding factors of her fruitful journey: Maths Friendships. As she said:
It is invaluable to have a friend who shares your interests, and it helps you stay motivated.
Maths4Maryams helps you to find such friends. Just register and join a problem-solving group. Each group hosts a Maths Friendship Day on Maryam’s birthday (12 May, 2اردیبهشت2) to celebrate her fruitful life. There, you might be able to meet your maths friends face-to-face. Who knows, you might find your Roya (if literally translated, “Dream”) in one of these groups.
